You might find especially in the mornings, that you feel highly anxious, restless, or agitated. There is this feeling in your body of impending doom, or a buzz especially in your lower torso and pelvic area. Why is this? Our levels of cortisol are naturally higher in the morning. It is natures way of priming us for the day ahead. But if we are already anxious, or stressed that extra cortisol can tip the balance and make us feel like we want to jump out of our skin. In that case two things can really help reset your stress hormones to a lower level. One is to do some vigorous exercises, like running, cycling or jogging. Or if you do not want to go out, some aerobics, dancing or whatever you fancy. The physical activity will help burn off the excess cortisol.
Now there is something else that you can do which is highly effective but takes a bit of getting used to: cold showers. There is a growing body of research into the benefits of cold exposure and how it can help our body to reset. Here is a way of doing cold showers that will not cause you to go into shock.
Start off with having a shower the way you usually do. Then take the shower-head off the hook and hold it down and away from you whilst turning the water to cold. Now begin to ‘shower’ from the feet up. Move the flow of cold water slowly up the legs towards your torso. Then go from your hands to your shoulders. Do it slowly so it feels okay and not too jarring. It is always best to start with your extremities. Next experiment with which parts of your body are ready to feel the cold. It might be your chest, your head or your belly. Or you can try your shoulders, lower back or neck. Take it slowly and go repeatedly back to the legs and arms, if other parts of the body find it a bit too much, until you can actually stand under the shower with all or most of your body. When you do it like this you will find how pleasant it can be to have a cold shower. You will be amazed how different you feel after you have done it. Your stress levels and your feelings of anxiety reduce a lot. You will be refreshed and feel very alive. I love it!
